Grades K,1,2- Literacy:
I am very happy to begin a new school year in Reading/Language Arts. We utilize the Intervention Journeys Program, which is linked to the general education classrooms. Many other phonics and reading programs including Steck Vaughn, Stevenson, Merrill Linguistics, Fundations, Triumphs, and Treasures are also used as supplemental instruction. The students are exposed to a multi-sensory learning environment that suits individual needs. New spelling words are given every Monday, with many activities linked to the words all week. Every Friday is a spelling test so please study these words with your child. Homework is important and given approximately 4 times per week. Your child will be given a reading log along with some reading materials. It would be helpful if your child reads every night! If you have any concerns, or need homework to be further modified, please do not hesitate to contact me. I consider it very important to be part of your child's education. I believe that together, we can make this a successful year!
In math, we will be utilizing the Envisions Math Program used in the general education classrooms. The students will learn the TouchMath strategies to help them with basic skills (counting, adding, subtracting, etc.). Additional programs, with many opportunities for hands-on activities, will be implemented to benefit all types of learners. Again, homework is important to reinforce skills learned and will be given approximately 3-4 times per week.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns you may have. With your help and support, I believe we can have a wonderful year in Math!
Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade
I am excited to be selected to instruct this challenging program to Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade! I will meet with your child once a week in K and 1st, and 3 times a week in 2nd grade during 1 marking period. We will be solving problems, connecting concepts, and thinking like experts. In Kindergarten, the Japanese art form of Origami will be introduced. In 1st grade, we will continue with more complex Origami. It helps the children with their fine motor skills, as well as problem solving skills. In 2nd grade, we will be working on geography, map skills and the Flat Stanley Project. Additionally, many hands-on lessons that consist of building, designing, and constructing, are planned that cross over into all subject areas. I am looking forward to a very productive, interesting and challenging year with your children!
